- This database contains extensive shareware marketing information. Using
- the information provided here will save you years of figuring it out on
- your own. Each section below is preceded by a path representing a
- location within MicroExcel's Jan. 1996 version of the shareware
- database. It won't take you long to figure it out.
-
- Shareware database/ Resources/ (ASP)
-
- Association of Shareware Professionals dues $100/year
- The ASP is the largest of the shareware organizations. Joining involves
- a review process of your products. These days the review process is
- just a check to make sure the program works and is not crippled in a
- fashion not supported by the ASP.
-
- The ASP provides the following.
-
- 1) a forum on CompuServe. ASPFORUM
- 2) produces a monthly CD-ROM that I believe gets distributed to major
- BBS around the country.
- 3) maintains a Web site but it is not as well organized as STAR's.
- 4) puts out a newsletter.
- 5) Rich Holler provides a very cheap ($15 or so) upload service to
- assist ASP members with distribution.
- 6) maintains a shareware database of products and author contact
- information.
-
- Of the available shareware organizations, the ASP is the most helpful to
- new authors. There is some debate as to how beneficial membership is to
- establish businesses. All of the services provided by the ASP are
- duplicated by independents outside the organization
-
- Probably one of the most valuable aspects of the ASP is the open forum
- on CompuServe. Here one can monitor messages for distribution
- opportunities. Membership is not required to view the public areas of
- the forum.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Resources/ (STAR)
-
- Shareware Trade Association and Resources dues $50\year
- Up until 1995 the ASP forbid its members from protecting (crippling)
- their software in anyway. All functions in the distributed version had
- to be the same as the registered one. Many authors felt this ruined
- their chances of getting very many registrations since there was no
- incentive to buy. STAR was formed as an alternative to the ASP. The ASP
- no longer has strict rules on crippling yet STAR lives on. STAR has the
- lead Web page design on the Internet. Its Web site consistently gets
- top reviews.
-
- Starting in 1996, STAR will be producing its own CD-ROM. This CD will
- be very low cost. Probably just over a $1.00. The members intend to
- give this CD away as a registration gift. It will also be made
- available to retail stores and other distributors as a promotional bonus
- gift.
-
- Star has a CompuServe forum at UKSHARE as do the other shareware
- organizations. It also produces a newsletter as is the norm.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Resources/ (ESC)
-
- The Educational Software Cooperative dues $25\year
- This organization is largely for educational software developers but
- others can join. The ESC works with Most Significant Bits to produce
- the ESC CD-ROM twice a year. Extent of CD distribution is not known
- although I have seen it carried by Tiger Software CD catalog. The ESC
- has a CompuServe forum at EDFORUM. They also put out a newsletter and
- have a Web page.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Resources/ (PsL)
-
- Public Software Library (a business)
- PsL is one of the largest catalog type distributors in the world. They
- also handle taking registrations for authors. Many authors report this
- as one of their best points of distribution.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Marketing tools/ Books/
-
- The Proper Care & Feeding of Your News Media
- This book was written by Jerry Olsen. He is a freelance writer who
- contracts with many of the major publishing houses. Of particular
- importance is the media list he puts out. Jerry has his own section on
- CompuServe in forum UKSHARE. You can ask him where the media list is or
- do a search of the libraries for the word MEDIA.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Marketing tools/ Services/ (FLFSoft)
-
- FLFSoft is a $10 upload service to a couple of major Web FTP sites. If
- you are on the Net you can probably do this yourself using the Internet
- Resource database provided by MicroExcel.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Marketing tools/ Services/ (MEGAPOST)
-
- MEGAPOST is a BBS uploading service. The cost is low and I have heard
- very good things about the results.
-
-
-
- Shareware database/ Address/ CD-ROM
-
- This database lists CD-ROM publishers. It is probably worth your while
- to contact each. The JCSM CD is a pay for access publisher. Entry is
- only $25. The JCSM CD will save you the headache of not knowing whether
- or not CD publishers have picked up your new program.
-
-
-
- Internet Resources/ Web sites/ Software (IN-TOUCH)
- IN-TOUCH puts out a newsletter to anyone interested in shareware
- products. This could get your product quite a bit of exposure if your
- product is reviewed. Drop by the site and see what it is about.
-
-
- Internet Resources/ Web sites/ Software (The Software Site)
- Software Site is one of the better shareware Web pages. There is no
- cost to list your work. Simply download their submission software and
- email in the DAT files.
